NAS Hard Drives

If you’re looking to backup a NAS to an external hard drive, Western Digital Elements external hard drives are off-label NAS hard drives. You can even find ways to “shuck” them online.

Please keep in mind that if you do “shuck” the drive, the warranty will be voided if you attempt to send back the failing, bare drive. Always keep the external enclosure and put the drive back in before sending for warranty purposes. Removing the drive from the enclosure and then adding it back before sending for warranty will not void your warranty.

A helpful viewer of the blog pointed out that if you do “shuck” the drive and use it in a redundant array, you will need to enable TLER on the drive. I have not done this myself, but I found a post on reddit that can help enable TLER on a Synology NAS.

Battery Backup Devices (UPS)

A UPS is an uninterruptible power supply that provides emergency power (in the form of a battery) if you lose power. It also acts as a surge protector and stabilizes voltage. It is highly suggested that you purchase and connect a UPS device to your NAS device.

The items below have a USB cable that will allow your NAS (or PC) to monitor the UPS to properly shut itself down in the event of a power failure. Never worry about your NAS again!
